Has anyone else heard about the story
relating to the red hand of Ulster
being on the Family crest?
Two rival Families, one of which being
the Donnellys, were in a race from the
Aran isles across the sea to the
mainland at Donegal-whichever clan
chief touched the soil could claim the
land for his family. As they approached
the land the Donnellys were losing. The
clan chief needed some quick thinking
and acting. So he chopped off his hand
and threw it onto the approaching beach
thus winning the contest and the land.

Greetings to North American cousins
from an Australian Donnolley. I only
found out last week the origins of our
clan. Cousins Michael and Patrick
Donnelly from Newbridge, Co Kildare,
were transported for life to New South
Wales for stealing a mare. They arrived
in Sydney aboard The Asia in 1825.
Assigned to William Ogilvie in the
Hunter Valley, where some of the family
has remained. Michael behaved, married
and was eventually pardoned. Patrick
absconded and became a bushranger. The
spelling changed to Donnolley around
the turn of last century. Slan go foill.

just thought I'd add to this most interesting site. Don't know all that much about family history except that they came from Ireland, landed in Canada and came across the Peace Bridge. Some were laborers like bricklayers, ironworkers, some were maids, all of them came over here and sent for the others at one point or another. My dad is John, who was a prize fighter in New York, his dad, John, was a bricklayer who died last year aged 91. Great Gramma was a twin, both were fortune tellers. Donnellys are some interest people.

entered the U.S. but eventually ended up

John Donnelly of Buffalo NY is my Grandfather, he met my grandmother Anne Roberts in NY and had my mother Patricia Catherine Donnelly. He was a cab taxi driver and an ambulance driver in the 1940's. His brother was James Donnelly, they were brought up in an orphanage in NY. James married a Delia and lived in the Bronx NY, he was a janitor. Delia was a servant for wealthy people in NY. I really want to know my grandfathers family, my mother hasn't seen him since she was a child, her uncle Charlie Roberts took her to Buffalo to see him in the 40's or 50's. Do I have any relatives out there???

I am tracing my Donnelly lineage which starts with my father, Herbert Donnelly b. May 18,1880 at Chorlton-upon-Medlock. His parents were Patrick and Emma (Nee Kellett) who lived at 34 Rutland Street, C-o-M, Lancs, England. Dad had at least one brother, John F. I'm not sure when father left England for Canada but it was around 1900. Perhaps the whole family emigrated I don't know.He served in the RNCVR from 1914-1921 and loved to race bicycles. He rode with the Wanderers and he is mentioned in several articles concerning bicycle racing. My Donnelly line comes from Ireland and my grandfather and his two sisters Catherine and Mary are listed as Irish in the 1881 Census. If anyone out there has any knowledge of this family please let me know. Joe

Hello my name is Amy Donnelly. I am 20 years old and my aunt(Judith Ann Donnelly) and I are looking for any relatives of Thomas Charles Donnelly, born June 12, 1963 in New Jersey. He moved to Livngston Manor where he married my grandmother(Blanche) and had five children, my mother, Cindy Lee Donnelly, Jacqueline Donnelly, Diane Donnelly, Judith Ann Donnelly, and MaryAnn Donnelly, who tragically left the world in November of 1986. It is believed that he died in 1988 in New Jersey. We have been told that he had three boys and other children unknown to us, we are hoping to locate anyone related to him so we can be at peace and come to terms with our past. If anyone has any information please contact me. Like everyone's responses, this is real neat and I wish I would of known sooner. Thanks a million, Amy Marie Donnelly PS. His mother's maiden name was Bertha Kiers(not sure of the spelling on the last name)

My Donnelly's are from, Crossmaglen, Creggan Parish, Co. Armagh. My father Peter and his 4 brothers and sisters were all born in NYC. His father, Peter , left Ireland in about 1930 and shortly after met and married my gmother, Catherine Morris who was from Crievekeeran, Creggan Parish, Co Armagh. Catherine's parents were Owen Morris and Catherine Cunningham and baptism sponsors were John Morris and Anne Morris. My gfather Peter's baptism sponsors were Hugh Casey and Ellen Hughes and the priest was P (or R) J McArdle. He had 9 brothers and sisters: John, Stephen, Patrick, Owen, Bridget, Margaret, Mary, Michael and James (all are now deceased). All left Ireland except Owen who is buried at Church of St. Patrick in Crossmaglen, and Michael who lived in a place called Hockballs Court (?) just over the Co. Armagh border in Co. Lough and Mary who married William Joyce and died in London. My ggfather was also Peter , buried at Church of St. Patrick in Crossmaglen as is my ggmother, Margaret McArdle . Don't have info on Peter (siblings, parents, from). Can anyone help? Margaret McArdle's mother was Rose Courtney. My understanding is that the house my gfather was born in (which no longer exists except for a bit of rock foundation) actually belonged to the McArdle's. Do any of these names ring a bell for anyone?

Very cool site! The little I know of my family tree is: Charles Donnelly married Jane McGuigan and had at least three children in Six Mile Cross Ireland-Sally Dec 1 1865, Eliza 1864 and Robert 1881. Robert married Mary Ann McParland from Forkill Armagh Ireland in Glascoe Scotland in 1903. They were my fathers parents and they migrated to Glace Bay (New Aberdeen) in 1910. My dad was Martin Donnelly 1917-1994. I would like to know more about Jane McGuigan and Charles Donnelly as I can't find any documents on them.

I just started on my genealogy and found this web site interesting and a bit daunting. Someone once commented that the Donnelly name is to Ireland what the Smith's are to the US. They were incorrect. We are all over the world! If anyone is starting out on their genealogy, I suggest they start with their parents birth certificates and work backwards from there. It can be a bit slow going but it is so nice to where you came from and where you are going. Take care all.

Such a gathering of the clan might help me in my quest. I've hit nothing but dead ends in traceing my line of the Donnelly's. My Grandfather was Lawrence, born around 1872, married Grace Johnson of Orange Co.,NY around 1889. They lived in Harriman, NY, Phillipsburg,NJ and Newark, NJ. They had 8 children, Lawrence Jr., Arthur,Adrian, Richard, William, George (my father), Rose and Alice. All family records were lost in the breakup of the family after my grandfather died during the depression.

i finally have something to have airbrushed on the tail of my harley davidson. My late grandfather sam was cousin to the "black" donnelly's from Lucan, Ontario. The story is that one night the people of town went out and killed the whole family. I guess they were heavy drinkers and very violent. There are books out and I'm trying to learn more about the whole situation....if anyone can help, please e-mail me.........thanks..Bobby
